Zec Dumoine

Filed under: Travel Journal — nomdeplumage @ 4:51 pm

Today was the day that I have been looking forward to since I arrived. My cousins own a rustic cabin in a spectacular region of lakes called Zec Dumoine, hence the title. We wake early and leave around 6:30am for our eight hour long drive. Our first stop is at the ever famous Dr Horton’s for essential supplies of coffee and donuts for breakfast. So unhealthy and so unlike me, but as the old cliche` goes, “when in Rome…..”. And as per usual with my cousins, a fight ensues over Kathy forgetting to order her own breakfast as well as her insistence of transferring the coffees to mugs with handles. This was a very SLOWWWWWWW process that tested Dura and my nerves. Great start! The drive itself started quietly while I was waiting for the coffee and donut sugar hit to kick in, then it was game on as Dura and I rock’n rolled and sang to our hearts content along with Roy Orbison, AC/DC, Bob Marley and anything in between 1960 to 1980.Oh, and the scenery was stunning by the way.
By 10:30am, the donuts and coffee had lost their potency and we needed the real deal. So we stopped off at a diner for a long anticipated hot breakfast. It almost killed me! Salty bacon, salty fried eggs, salty fried potatoes, salty butter and terrible coffee. From then onwards, I could not drink enough water. In fact, I was sick, but kept drinking.
After six hours and many toilet breaks later, we arrive at the entrance to the lake district. We stop to pick up our full gas tank and last opportunity to fill up on petrol. The next most important stage is to sigh in with the ranger’s. From then on, it was a two hour bumpy drive along a rough gravel road to the lake.
