Three Crazy Ladies Hit Toledo Zoo

Today Alden’s daughter is getting married at his farm and my aunt has been invited. A nerve racking day for her in two ways. Firstly, she will meet Alden’s family for the first time and secondly, she is very upset that I have not been invited to the wedding. She was whinging the whole morning about it and I was pacifying her and letting her know that it is OK. In all honesty, I was not upset because my decision to visit was a last minute arrangement and the wedding was planned weeks in advance and another important point, is that I do not know the family and therefore I would be an outsider. But arrangements were made that I would not spend the day alone. Two of my aunt’s friends, Shirley and Joanne came just before lunch to collect me and the three of us crazy girls drove to Toledo Zoo in Ohio. The drive was an hour long and it was so funny. Shirley and Joanne are two adorable woman who are so friendly and generous. They love to banter each other and I played referee.
We arrived to a busy zoo on a very hot day. I was excited for many ways because it gave me a chance to see in the flesh animals that I have only seen on TV. The stunning American icon the Bald Eagle, the long nosed black bear and the magnificent polar bear, to name a few.
We walked the vast zoo with my refereeing still on active duty and us girls laughing the whole way. Lunch was needless to say, packed with hungry patrons and so choice was limited. I opted for a chicken salad wrap that was unusual to say the least, very sweet lemonade to drink, a packet of tasteless Lays chips and a cookie with smarties. One stand-out moment was in the aquarium. There was many different species of sea life with descriptions of their origin and habitat. One, which the very poor quality photo is trying to show, the description of an Australian specie of fish and how “Australians give very unusual names to their fish”. A proud Aussie moment and a chuckle for good measure.
After fours hours of walking and talking, we left and made our way back to Joannes via the famous Walmart. Now this is another American institution that I was excited to see. In a word ‘massive’. It was great and I loved the vast choices of not only food, but clothes and alcohol. We did our shopping and went home to Joanne’s. A widower of just a few years, she has had a tough life. We sat in her stunning home, sipping lethal cocktails as we were listening to her trials and tribulations. What a woman and what stories she had to tell. The ever beloved Tootsie arrived and after some deliberations of how to spend the rest of the evening, we finally decided on going to Shirley’s for dinner, more cocktails and a game or two if scrabble. Shirley lives in a beautiful house right on the foreshore of Lake Erie. We opened the back sliding door and with the gentle whoosh of the water coming to the sandy shores, we watched the sun go down as we ate our dinner and sipped our cocktail. By this time after two very large cocktails, I was feeling somewhat light headed, but I needed every ammunition to stay ahead of the three crazy woman who play a mean scrabble game. Tootsie is the scrabble queen and would allow no cheating and in fact, she whipped our butts. I came in a very respectable second. The day ended late and I taken home to an empty house. I believed my aunt crept in quietly in the wee hours of the morning.
