Ashes to Ashes

My friend and I woke early for what would be a very surreal day. The weather was cold and a light mist hovered as we drove for more than an hour to a pet crematorium. Nadine really need the support and although she had come to terms with the sudden death of her pet, there was still a difficult process ahead for us both.
We arrived early and somewhat hesitant if we were in the right place? But they were waiting for us and invited us in out of the cold. I waited in a room while Nadine filled in paper work and payment. She was then given the task of choosing an urn to house Lucy’s ashes. The choices were quite modern and yet very classy, making this whole process very dignified and surreal on how far we have come in treating beloved pets and giving them a peaceful send-off and burial. With the decision made, it was time to face the hardest part. We were directed into the main room where the actual cremation will take place. Here Lucy was wheeled out to us on a trolley and laying peacefully in a cane basket. A blanket draped over her still still body and once removed, we were given the opportunity to touch her. She was so cold and lifeless and Nadine became emotional in her final good-bye.
The man who completed the actual cremation, pushed the trolley over to the oven and placed Lucy’s body very gently onto a metallic piece of equipment, to be slowly pushed into the waiting flames. The instant smell of hair burning assaulted my nostrils. We stayed only momentarily and then went back to the waiting room. The process was very quick and within an hour, Lucy’s ashes lay in a orange pyramid. The whole process was done efficiently and very professionally and a credit to the staff who worked there.
Nadine placed the ceramic pyramid onto my lap as we made the long drive home. I held the pyramid gently on my lap and once home, Nadine set the urn on a shelf above the TV, with a candle burning and a large photo of Lucy next to the pyramid. Finally, it was over and with Lucy at rest, we were able to move on…………….
