I awoke early, lazy and wondering what new adventure I was to seek today? Most things on a Sunday are closed and the weather was cold and overcast. After breakfast, I went over to my hostess Marcella for some inspiration. She informed me, that I was actually meant to be checking-out today. I was so sure that I was leaving tomorrow and needless to say, I was not prepared. Marcella confirmed my departure by telephoning my next hostel and checking my paperwork. She was right and I was left to race back to my dormitory and pack within minutes. I was flustered and in a panic, but I made it in record time and was left only to say my goodbyes. To my surprise, when the moment came, I became emotional and teary-eyed. My hosts, Marcella and her husband Mohammed, treat their guests like you are part of their family. I met wonderful people and shared wonderful memories with them.
I arrived in Lake Como depressed and lacking enthusiasm to continue my travels. Fate had stepped in and lead me to this wonderful picturesque place. I was spoilt with the scenery, weather, friends and overcame my emotions and ready to embark on my new adventures. It was the best outcome and something I needed.
At a small train station and onto an old train, I departed Lake Como with heavy grey clouds and the cold making me shiver. My journey took me past small villages and further into Italy. My destination was the ever fashionable and soccer capital of Italy – Milan. Upon arrival, I made my way from the main train station to the suburban line. Not understanding the instructions on how to purchase a ticket, I was happy to receive assistance from a young man. That is until he put out his hand and asked for money. Which leads me back to my title and asking, is it so difficult that one cannot help a stranger in need without asking for monetary payment? Obviously it is? Reluctantly, I gave him two Euro’s and walked away to catch my train.
To find my hostel was easy. The directions from the train station was fairly accurate and I found my hostel without any problems. But I had arrived early and could not check-in until after 4pm. I had no motivation to walk through the rain and cold, so I sat in a communal dinning room, reading and writing. When check-in time arrived, I was able to get into my room and meet some of my room-mates. The rooms itself are clean and decent, but the fact that you had to lock your belongings in a locker in the corridor, made for some noisy evenings. The facilities were otherwise decent. I rested, talked with my new friends and planned on an early evening.
