New Friends in Luzern

Hooray, the holiday’s are over (for a few days at least) and the shops are now open for business. I am in desperate need of new boots and Lana has kindly offered to spend the day shopping with me. This would not be an easy task and maybe I should have warned Lana straight up, that to find boots for my feet would be a Herculean effort.

Ok, so what is wrong with my feet you ask? Well, nothing if you consider small, wide feet with a very high arch any problem.  To buy boots is almost impossible and that is why I do not tell Lana. But she was confident and in great spirits and so I tag along and pray that she will not get too upset with me. We walked and talked through the streets of Luzern and found many shops that sold shoes. To say that we found a lot of boots and not at reasonable prices, is a fair call, only the boots would not slide past my high arch. The morning was almost over and we came to a store that proved more hopeful than the 100’s we visited before. To quote that “beggar’s cannot be chooser’s” is putting it mildly, for what I eventually had to buy (at a massive marked up price) was something akin to boots worn by astronauts. I am not joking! They were black, not of any material that is natural (plastic), very thick plastic sole, laced and woollen lining. The most important thing is that I could slip them on and they were also both warm and non-slip. But a valuable lesson that I learnt (later), is that woollen lined boots make your feet sweat and with that comes an unholy foot odour that would haunt me for the rest of my travels.

Lunch was at a small café, tucked nicely away from the main foot traffic and overlooking the beautiful lake. What I love about Lana is her confidence and undeterred attitude about not speaking the local language. But it worked and we got a good seat and wonderful service. The menu is limited and I ordered spaghetti Bolognese; which I vowed never to do in public because of the mess I usually make on my clothes, but I am saved as it came with penne pasta instead. Whew! The meal was lovely and we both enjoyed the company more.

After a lazy lunch, we walked to the very posh Schwierhof Hotel to meet with Lana’s friend. I felt slightly uncomfortable as I was certainly not dressed for the occasion (although I was wearing my new boots), but in the end it did not matter. We sipped our cappuccino’s and talked whilst overlooking the stunning city before us. I stayed only for a short time and left to leave the two friends alone and finish catching-up. I caught the bus back to the hostel and had an early dinner.

It was not long, that I received a knock at door and the receptionist walks in with a woman behind her. This woman quickly inspects the room and then says she will take it. I say nothing. The women both leave and soon after, the woman comes back with her belonging’s and introduces herself. I ask what is going on and she informs me that Nellie became her roommate last night and kept her awake the night. Not wanting a repeated performance, Christiane changed rooms. Karma! Lana arrives soon after and we spend the rest of the evening (with another new roommate) laughing, getting to know each other’s story and playing cards. Great energy and wonderful evening.

You have to ask – that life throws challenges at you and then makes you question yourself and the experience. But hold steadfast and true to your nature, life then presents something special in gratitude. Friends the reward.
